My association with Bangalore begins from 1948. I have witnessed the animosity gradually developing among Kanadigas particulary against the Tamils. The exodus of weavers from nearby erstwhile Salem district to the nearby Bangalore and other towns and cities in Karnataka added insult to injury because they were seen as rivals in menial job market by sons of the soil. Bangalore was already a city of Tamils from the days of British Raj becasue the British encouraged Tamils to settle in and around Cantonement area. Sri Jataayu mentions about Madras Regiment in Halesuru (Ulsoor) area in his beautiful article; this area is heavily populated with Tamils and The Madras Regiument was nothing but Saupers and Miners dvision, that is fodder for the guns sent in advance to the front before the British soldiers were to follow! And these saupers and miners were Tamils only! Especially Dalits from North Arcot and Maravars from southern districts of Tamilnadu. This area was also military settlement of skilled workers and technicians (Madras Engineering of Defence), who are again mostly Tamils. Bangalore was also littered with textile mills in those days and most of the workers were Tamils. In constructuion, again it was Tamils doing the job! Later on, HAL was the major player providing job opportunity to Tamils. Even today, you can find large number of Tamils in HAL (after his retirement from defence service, my son-in-law is absorbed by HAL where he went on deputation only!). At the time of IT boom, againg it was Tamils taking the lead! It took time for Kannadigas to wake up to the situation. Historically, as Jataayu rightly mentions, most of the parts of Karnataka were part of Tamilnadu only but that is NOT going to help now. Mysore is referred as Erumainadu in Tamil inscriptions. Short of hands among Kannadigas in labour related jobs and in the IT later on, resulted in Tamils settling in large number in and around Bangalore. You can find Tamils considerably even in coffee estates of Karnataka. Presence of Tamils in every strata helped politicians to exploit the situation. They could easily garner support from Kannadigas whipping parochial sentiments at various levels in the social set up. In my opinon, unveiling the statue of Tiruvallluvar after many years of hiidng under jute bags will open another spot to insult Tamils whenever any kind of regional tension arises in future between Tamilnadu and Karnataka. Poor Tiruvalluvar may be subjected to disrespect; I need not tell how. My personal opinion is this kind of statue culture should stop. Have a garden of trees or a waterbody named after the person if you want to rever and respect him/her. Spread Kural distributing its translation in the language of the state FREE (pamphlet containing select kurals from various chapters )if you want to introduce Tiruvalluvar. If you feel a statue is a must, depict a Kural instead of Valluvar. Tirukural has very many scenario to depict in a statue. You can even hold art exhibitions with paintings and drawings of Scenic Kural.
My experience with most of the Tamils in Bangalore is they sre not keen to learn Kannada; Sri Jataayu may be an eception! Tamils speak Tamil in markets, vendors and petty shopkeeprers and use Hindi and English to get things done. Necessity to learn Kannada to speak is less. This agitates a Kannadiga mind. I have one Kannadiga friend here in Chennai; his complaint: I can manage with my Tamil in Bangalore whereas he cannot manage with his Kannada in Chennai!
