கண்ணை விற்று சித்திரம் வாங்குவது என்பது எவ்வளவு முட்டாள்தனமானது என்பது பொது அறிவை பயன்படுத்தும் அனைவருக்கும் புரியும்.நுகர்வோர் என்று பசாதாபபடுவது போல படித்த மேதாவிகள் பேசும்போது ஒன்றை நினைவு படுத்திக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் .கப்பலோட்டிய தமிழன் வ உ சி கப்பல் விட்ட பொது பரங்கி கம்பெனியார் ஏராளமான சலுகைகளை பயணிகளுக்கு வாரி வழங்கியது பயணிகள் மீதான அன்பு காரணம் அல்ல .இந்திய மண்ணை சுரண்ட ..என்பதை வரலாற்றிலிருந்து பாடம் கற்றுக்கொள்ள வில்லை என்றால் நம்மை வரலாறும் நாட்டுக்காக உயிர் பொருள் ஆவி அனைத்தையும் தியாகம் செய்த நமது முன்னோர்களது ஆன்மாவும் மன்னிக்காது…

the author has missed to higlight the benefits of economies of scale that a organized market offers – Indian Retail being unorganized is higly inefficient – we waste quite a lot – there are gross inefficiencies in supply chain, customer care, pricing, employment and productivity

– we have around 9 million kirana stores in our country – one can imagine what money we should be wasing in distribution alone.
- unorganized nature of our retail sector is one reason why we face high fluctuations in the prices of grocery from time – time in a year

the author also compares the staffing levels of walmart and our retail sector – how can maintain double standrards – we often crib about the inefficiencies of BSNL who staff above 25,000 people and hail the efficiency levels of Airtel who spend 5 times lower in staff cost

what we waste hurts us more than what unemployment would cause – by saving what we waste it imay be far easier to create alternative employment opportunities

in the current form of retailing – it is not the poor who win, it is the middlemen who make the most – one can read about eCoupal to understand how ITC created huge incentives for the famers by obviating the need to go to middlemen run mandis – “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echoupal”

i hope the real message the author wanted to convey is to curb foreign invasion of retail sector and not creation of an organized retail sector.

We should also remember that Walmart is not really about the riches – it is more about the poors

திரு குருமூர்த்தி அவர்களின் பார்வை சரியே. ஆனால் பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனகள் மற்றும் நம்நாட்டு பெரு நிறுவனகளும் அவ்வளவு எளிதாய் இந்த நுகர்வோரை தம் பக்கம் இழுத்து விட முடியாது. பலகாரங்கள் (snack food) தொழில் இதற்கு ஒரு உதாரணம். மிகவும் சிறிய வியாபாரிகள் , முதலில் பதிக்க பட்டாலும். சுதாரித்துகொண்டு பின்னர் நுகர்வோருக்கு தேவையான சேவைகளை செய்ய கற்று கொள்வார்கள். சிறிய சூப்பர் மார்க்கெட் பல சென்னையில் தோன்றி அந்தந்த இடங்களில் பெரிய நம் நாட்டு சூப்பர் மார்க்கெட் சில்லறை வணிக நிறுவனகளுக்கு நல்ல போட்டியாக நடகின்றதை நாம் காணலாம். இதனால் தொழில் நுட்ப உக்திகளை நம் நாட்டு வணிகர்களும் நடை முறை படுத்துவர். இந்திய தொழில் முனைவோர் இந்த போட்டியிலும் வெற்றி பெறுவார்.

The very reason US is in this shape right now is, they outsourced everything, because they can, 2. cheaper manufacturing etc. China play with their currency all the time, and US did not have any lever to stop the huge trade balance they were getting into.
So, the bottom line is every country is going to have huge masses of population talented in various parts of the business, and just because, we can outsource one part because of the cost, will not do justice to that segment of the population. And that too in a country like India, with huge populations, these segments will be very very large, so unless otherwise walmart or other retailer can source internally, and produce market share for those resources, it is not advisable to create mega malls/stores. India has an excellent system, where there are layers of population who could survive at various levels of daily earnings, and still the opportunities to move up the layer if they desire so. Lets not demolish this setup.

The author did NOT mention any thing about the consumers.

The consumers are the key.

Consumers is benefitted with the introduction of Mega Malls/ Hyper market.

Both the Hyper Markets as well as small vendors are required by the consumers.

To buy petty items like Milk, Soap… no body will go all the way to Hyper market, but from small vendors.

And Mega malls / Hyper malls offer new and vareity of products, which the street vendor does not have access to get and supply to consumer.

Thus both the Hyper Markets and small vendors can survive – together they are complementing the requirements of the consumer.

Till today the price was dictated by the small vendors, now they should be prepared to face the free market.
