2 (Kamba Ramayanam Canto 2, Part 2)

2 The Canto of the River – 2

African Elephant swimming

Translation: The abundant energy of the surging waters rolled heavy and gamboling elephants, horses and many other kinds of animals in its current. Exotic creepers mixing and moving along (resembled the flags fluttering on the chariots) and it appeared as though the river in spate had assembled its army (of chariots, horses, elephants and all other animals) declaring war on the ocean.

Elucidation: The current pulls great elephants, horses and other animals in its force. The poet uses the phrase ‘maNi kodi’ as a pun to mean ‘a beautiful creeper’ and ‘gem studded flag’. And the speed with which the ‘army’ moves on, appears like the angry march of war on the sea.

On Sarayu and the way it ran on the lands four.

Translation: Even as the conduct (personal as well as kingly) of the numerous kings in the line of the Sun, the river moves on. Sarayu feeds Life of all kinds on this land, surrounded by the ocean, like the mother’s breast.

Elucidation: The life of a King and his conduct, both at the personal level and in the affairs of his kingdom, demand force and self-discipline. It is from the King—or the administrative head—that immense energy originates and spreads all over the land that he rules. Obviously, any force or energy that is let out needs to be regulated. It therefore becomes the duty of the King from whom immense energy and authority emanate and perocolate downwards, to ensure that such force and authority spread about constructively, taking particular care not to give room that they are not expended destructively.

The Kings, numberless they are, in the line of Raghu, which is also known as Surya Vamsa, have all been conducting their personal lives and the administrative process relentlessly and consistently in the right direction. The river Sarayu’s surge that was so enormous that it could roll even elephants, horses and other animals in its stride, was well within the banks. The current was as controlled and regulated as the Kings of the Sun Dynasty gave a controlled vent to their authority to ensure the welfare of all. And due to this reason, the river is like the breast of a mother to every kind of life abounding on this earth that is surrounded by the oceans. Though surrounded by oceans, all forms of life depend on the river for their survival as the babies do on their mother’s breast.

Translation: The water whirled past the hills and on its way, various natural perfumes, pestled and powdered by the women of the hills and other fragrants, sandal wood, flowers of various kinds, grass, leaves with medicinal properties moved with the current, mixed and absorbed in the waters. And the river (with its sheer energy) broke rows and rows of honeycombs on its way, making honey spill and mix in it flow.

Elucidation: Land was traditionally classified into five, namely, Kurinji or hills and lands surrounding hills, Mullai, or forests and lands surrounding them, Marudham, or fields and their surrounding lands and lastly Palai, deserts and their surroundings. Of these five, a river can obviously course only through the four. When a river courses through a desert, it can be a desert no more! The poet describes the course of the river through the four categories of land. This verse speaks about its flow through the hills and their tracts. He details the flowers found in the hills and other perfumes by name. The waters were filled with such natural fragrances and the domestic preparations like chunnam, a talcum powder of those days, and other frgrants.

Translation: The river rushing into the hamlets of huntsmen dwelling in the forests raining its incessant shafts of water, made the womenfolk run away, making frightful cries, and carried the bows and arrows of the huntsmen (from their dwellings), thus resembling the acts of a warring foe.

Elucidation: The river has coursed down the hills and has entered the forestlands, which is the second in the major divisions of land. The course of Sarayu through the jungles and through the jungle hamlets is described here.

Translation: Making incursion into the cultivated lands and its surroundings, the waters gushed through the houses, plucking away the hoops that hold pots of curds, milk, butter and clarified butter, emptied the pots as they went; fell great trees; and ran away with the sarees of the doe-eyed damsels, mimicking the acts of the Lord who danced on the heads of Kaliya, the serpent.

Elucidation: The river has flown through forests and is now entering the cultivated land. There we find it robbing milk, curds etc., felling the trees, and flowing away with clothings, reminding one of the frolicking Krishna.
